Wild Williamsburg String Thing

This was made in a workshop at the 2002 Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in Williamsburg, Virginia. At the beginning of the class, Ami asked us to tie a strip around the part of our body that matched how controlled we wanted our quilt (around the big toe for extremely controlled and moving up from there). Since I had just finished a 2-day Kaleidescope Snowflakes class with Paula Nadelstern (fabulous class, but very exacting), all of my Type A-ness was gone - my strip was in my hair.

This quilt is massive. It is 108 x 120 inches. I had to wait until it was displayed at the Quilters Unlimited quilt show (Dulles Expo Center, Chantilly VA, first weekend in June) to get a picture of it hanging straight. It is this size so my husband and I can not possibly pull it off each other at night.

It was quilted with varigated thread (Jester by Superior Threads) that I purchased during the 2002 MAQF. I quilted it all by myself on my Bernina 1130. It was quilted using the Divide & Conquer method where I quilted the center part first, then added the borders and their batting and quilted them.

This was such a fun class! Thanks, Ami!
